One size does not fit all when it comes to slipping off-the-shelf inserts into your shoes and expecting them to help improve any condition you want to correct. The feet are a complex part of the body where each foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments which all work for mobility. Get it wrong with these inserts and you could experience interference with your body alignment and cause yourself a secondary misalignment which brings on more pain than relief.
Effective orthotic therapy requires custom made orthotics (inner soles) that maintain and support all three arches needed for proper foot, knee, hip and back alignment. The cushioning or lift helps to compensate and correct for conditions where your foot does not align.
Dr Spencer will discuss your condition and determine if orthotic therapy is right for you. If so, he will take a mold of your feet and have custom orthotics made for your specific condition. Your custom orthotics will take a few weeks to arrive, so expect to pick them up at his office to ensure a proper fitting has been made. He will also advise you of a gradual break in period so you do not experience discomfort as your feet, legs, bones and muscles will be functioning differently than before. If this is your first pair of orthoticts, it may take 2 to 4 weeks for your body to adjust to them, depending on how much time you spend on your feet.
